Chinchilla fur is without a doubt the most plush and luxurious of all furs.  Most people when they touch it for the first time are astonished at how soft it is, to the point that the fur does not seem to register to your fingers' sensory perception.  Chinchilla fur is the densest of all fur types with some 20,000 hairs per square cm, with up to 50 hairs that branch out from each hair follicle. The fur is amazingly soft and silky.  Most recognizable in black and white colouring, they can also range to paler grey shades or even brown with white.

 

 

Chinchilla fur garments have always been incredibly luxurious, found in capes, bolero jackets, ¾ or full length coats.  Chinchilla garments are not often found on the vintage market as they seem to be the type of fur that is kept close by, but also it is quite delicate so not the longest wearing.  In their prime they are spectacular.  Many celebrities seem to agree.

 

 

All chinchillas found on the market today will be raised on small family farms in Canada, US, South America and Europe, with meat often being consumed locally.
